Elder Abuse

Unfortunately over one million cases of elder abuse are reported each year in the United States. With a growing elder population, this number is sure to expand. Many victims are people who are older, frail, or have decreased mental capabilities and are vulnerable and cannot help themselves and depend on family members, caretakers and others to meet their most basic needs.

Some examples of Elder abuse are as follows:

  • Physical abuse - Any act of violence that causes physical pain, injury, impairment or disease.
  • Neglect - Failure of a caretaker to provide the care, goods or services necessary to avoid physical harm, mental anguish or mental illness.
  • Miscellaneous - Violation of personal rights (failure to respect the aging person’s dignity and autonomy), medical abuse, abandonment
  • Sexual abuse - Any non-consensual sexual contact or exposure of any kind.
  • Emotional or psychological abuse - Conduct that causes mental anguish, e.g., humiliation, isolation, intimidation, insults or threats (verbal or non-verbal).
  • Financial abuse - Misuse of an elderly person’s money or assets such as stealing or coercion.
